Driving After Shoulder Surgery: What You Need to Know
Posted by Eric J. Sanders, MD | Shoulder & Elbow Specialist
Most states do not have specific laws that prohibit driving after shoulder surgery, but safe driving depends on the surgery performed, individual recovery, and function. Here are key considerations:
🛑 Do Not Drive While Wearing a Sling
Driving with a sling is unsafe and may be considered legally impaired.
In the event of an accident, your insurance coverage may be at risk due to liability concerns.
✅ General Driving Guidelines
I recommend no driving until your first postoperative visit, usually 2 weeks after surgery.
After this visit, many patients may be cleared to drive if they:
Are off narcotic pain medication
Can safely operate a vehicle without violating post-op precautions
Have adequate strength, control, and reaction time
Although this may not allow for traditional "10" and "2" hand positioning, laws to not require such technique. Laws only mandate the safe operation of a vehicle without physical and or mental impairment. If you are capable of safely navigating your vehicle, despite a low resting hand position, you are allowed to operate your vehicle.
🚘 Tips for Returning to Driving
Start with short, familiar routes
Drive during daylight and low-traffic times
Avoid sudden or forceful shoulder movements
Ensure you are fully alert and reaction-capable
Recovery timelines for driving vary widely—from 2 to 8 weeks—depending on the type of surgery, your progress, and your surgeon’s recommendations.
Talk to Your Surgeon
Your recovery plan should always be tailored to your unique case. Driving clearance depends on your surgery, healing rate, and comfort level. Never resume driving without approval from your orthopedic surgeon.
