Sling Use After Shoulder Surgery: What You Need to Know

Posted by Eric J. Sanders, MD | Shoulder & Elbow Specialist

Shoulder surgery is a major step toward regaining comfort and function, but the recovery period is just as important as the procedure itself. One of the most common questions patients ask is: “How long do I have to wear a sling?” and “When can I drive again?” This guide breaks down sling requirements after different types of shoulder surgeries and outlines safe guidelines for returning to driving after surgery.

Why a Sling Is Necessary After Shoulder Surgery

A shoulder sling plays a vital role in protecting healing tissues after surgery. By immobilizing the joint, the sling helps reduce stress on the repaired structures, promotes soft tissue healing, and prevents accidental movements that could compromise your surgical outcome.

Sling Guidelines by Shoulder Surgery Type

Rotator Cuff Repair

  • Sling duration: 4 to 6 weeks

  • The sling supports healing of the rotator cuff tendon before you begin active motion. Premature movement could lead to re-tear or incomplete healing.

Labral Repair (Bankart or SLAP)

  • Sling duration: Typically 4 to 6 weeks

  • Immobilization allows the labrum to heal and prevents stress on the sutures. Early motion may risk dislocation or repair failure.

Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement & Hemiarthroplasty

  • Sling duration: Often 1 to 2 weeks

  • Passive range of motion is usually introduced within 5 to 14 days to avoid stiffness. However, it's critical to protect the subscapularis repair, which is essential for shoulder stability and strength. Discuss your exact timeline with your surgeon.

Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

  • Sling duration: 2 weeks

  • Early sling use helps incision healing and reduces the risk of dislocation while the surrounding muscles re-engage and stabilize the joint.

Talk to Your Surgeon

Your recovery plan should always be tailored to your unique case. Sling use depends on your surgery, healing rate, and comfort level. Never remove your sling without approval from your orthopedic surgeon.
